When Don Haskins was hired at Texas Western College in 1961, one of the first things he told the administration was that he wanted to host a holiday basketball tournament. The first-ever Sun Bowl Basketball Tournament was held Dec. 28-29, 1961, and featured Baylor, New Mexico, New Mexico State and Texas Western. The Miners won the inaugural holiday tournament that year, defeating New Mexico 73-55 in the championship game. Nolan Richardson, who would later win an NCAA Championship as head coach of Arkansas, was one of seven players selected to the first All-Tournament team.
